Bench heights: all you need to know to get started

WHAT HEIGHT FOR MY BENCH ?

To make sitting easier and to be sure that your feet touch the ground, there are recommended heights and dimensions. Standard finished height for a bench is 45cm !

The height of the bench legs will therefore be 40 cm. (between us, it is the same height as a side table, a stool or a sofa). In this configuration, you sit directly on the wooden top. This is a recommendation., there are benches with variable height according to several criteria :

• Tall people will appreciate a higher bench to be more comfortable around the knees
• For a daybed, a bench effect, a lower bench is more aesthetic

The chosen thickness of the top obviously affects the final height. Staying on a standard 40 foot will impact the final height.

WHAT WIDTH AND LENGTH FOR MY BENCH ?

There are no rules written in stone here, it will depend on the available space and the project. Is it a decorative bench, extra, which will take place around the table, a little of the 3? Depending, this will affect the dimensions.

The width is often between 30 and 40 cm to be comfortable for a seat bench. While for a decorative bench, 20 to 30 cm will be enough.

From a certain length, it is necessary to add a central leg to prevent the top from sagging over time :

• Feet at each end for a length between 50 cm and 1.80 m
• Beyond 1m80, depending on the thickness and quality of the material, it is recommended to add an additional central foot

WHAT PLACEMENT FOR THE FEET ?

The placement has a direct impact on the aesthetics of the furniture and especially on the overall stability of the bench.

To ensure a stable bench, we advise you to position the legs no more than 20 cm from the edge to the very end of the top. By fixing it further inside, there is a risk of tipping over if a guest sits too far at the edge.

In terms of aesthetics, it is possible to choose legs that align edge to edge with the width of the top, but also legs that are a little narrower than the top. It's only a matter of taste.

A BENCH WITH CUSHION

To make a bench more comfortable, especially if it is intended for long hours at a table. Plan for patties or large cushions about ten centimeters thick, you will need feet 30 to 35 cm high, unless you are very tall or have very long legs !

WHAT COMBINATION BENCH LEG AND DINING TABLE LEG ?

The creation of a bench can be associated with that of a dining table. In this configuration what to do? :

• Combine bench legs and table legs with the same design and the same color
• Combine the legs by design but differentiate by color
• Choose 2 different designs with the same color

Again, no absolute truth, just a few tips and questions to ask yourself before choosing..

Combining leg model and leg colors creates a harmonious unit and a design unit. Conversely, this does not give an identity to each element. In this configuration, generally the bench legs are made with thinner profiles than the dining table legs by choice of our team.

Combining the same feet but differentiating them by color allows you to add a touch of color and give each piece of furniture an identity. If this same color is found in small touches in the room, it is ideal, otherwise it can swear.

Choosing different legs with the same color, creates a general harmony in the room, while giving each piece of furniture its own identity. The bench can easily be transformed into a decorative bench in the same room without recalling the table.

A BENCH FOR THE OUTDOORS !

All our feet are powder coated and can be used outdoors. All the advice and recommendations explained can therefore be applied in the same way.

We recommend that you protect the part of the foot that is in direct contact with the ground with plastic pads so as not to scratch the base and damage the paint, at the risk of part of the foot rusting over time.
