Originally French, the Art Deco movement was born in the 1910s and became popular in the 1920s. At first, this artistic movement mainly concerned interior architecture such as tapestries, stained glass or paintings. It then spread all over the world and affected other sectors such as furniture, fashion and even interior design. Its apogee lasted about ten years to be then replaced by other artistic movements.
However, art deco has not left your interiors thanks to its various contemporary aspects.
GEOMETRIC DECO
The Art Deco style is represented by a geometric decoration with different types of shapes: straight lines, zigzag patterns. In addition to this, stylized and abstract patterns accompany more standardized ones, floral patterns, for example.
We find these different patterns on different materials.
- Straight and zigzag lines, more on carpets or wall decoration like picture frames
- Floral and stylish designs for tapestries and wallpapers
- Abstract patterns, for decoration of all kinds: vases, posters...
Art deco furniture was also standout pieces. Lines were often straight and clean, with rounded edges and smooth surfaces.
Art Deco interiors were often characterized by a symmetrical layout. The rooms were designed in a balanced way, with particular attention paid to spatial organization. Horizontal and vertical lines were favored to create a sense of order and stability.
BRIGHT COLORS
Art Deco uses a bright, contrasting color palette. Here are some examples of combinations corresponding to this style:
- Black and gold
- Black and silver
- Red and Blue
- Green and yellow
These mixes recall the vitality and energy of this artistic movement.
USE OF MATERIALS
Art Deco is not just colors, it is also specific materials. With this style, vary the pleasures such as tinted glass, reinforced concrete, aluminum or even plexiglass. All this allows to create clean but also bold lines corresponding to all the characteristics of this artistic style.
Tinted glass
Tinted glass is used in a variety of ways. To give a modern look to the railing of the stairs, or with the earthenware of the kitchen and the bathroom.
Reinforced concrete
Reinforced concrete is a mixture of mineral sand and gravel. It is a fairly cold material often used in contemporary construction. This is why we find it a lot in kitchens as worktops. They are thus massive, unique and beautiful.
Being a resistant material, which we often see on the shelf, reinforced concrete becomes a piece of furniture in its own right during the manufacture of coffee table for example.
Cold materials
Aluminium is very stylish and is an integral part of an industrial-style decoration. It is a modern and thin material that adds character to your interior. Marble and brass are also representative of the art deco style and combine perfectly with other materials.
The Art Deco style combines geometric shapes with precise materials creating a contemporary and designer interior.
The influence of this style lasts over time by being part of the smallest details of your decoration, giving it unique elegance.
